The Astra Museum of Sibiu - also called the Museum of Traditional Popular Civilization - is one of the largest open-air museums in the world, covering an area of approximately 96 hectares.
Located in the Dumbrava Sibiului Natural Park, 5 kilometers away from the center of Sibiu, the Astra Museum is the perfect getaway where we can rest admiring the beauty of nature and at the same time embrace the traditional Romanian values.
It was founded in 1967 and includes all kinds of buildings, scattered along a lake. The most spectacular are the windmills, the water mills, as well as the reproductions according to the architectural styles of the houses from the areas of Romania - Muntenia, Moldova, Ardeal, Banat, Oltenia, Maramureș, Moldova.
Along the more than 10 kilometers of winding alleys, the museum greets us with a long-created universe, where Romanians timidly laid out a place of their own that gave them an identity and uniqueness.
The interiors of the traditional houses are well preserved and expose the simplicity in which the Romanian peasants lived. It illustrates - through the few jugs, painted plates and blankets beautifully placed in the rooms - the common sense and purity of soul of the simple man.
Traditional houses appear to us at every step, making it difficult for us to decide what to contemplate first.
We would research them all, we would like to discover what other proofs of simplicity, modesty exist in each of the Romanian architectural jewels that delight the soul.
These constructions represent true testimonies of what differentiates us from the rest of the peoples, testimonies that show us both ourselves and foreigners, the origins of a creative, arrogant and hardworking nation.
Even the animals that coexisted with the Romanian peasant over the centuries are not missing from the landscape, contributing to the creation of the authentic atmosphere.
In addition to the exhibition of the traditional Romanian universe, the Astra Museum offers visitors places where various crafts, cart rides, playgrounds and accommodation take place.
Educational and cultural activities are also often organized. We had the chance to visit the museum on the 24th of June, on International Ia Day, where we participated in a wonderful cycling activity wearing ... of course, an ie!
