Red Ravine

Writer's picture: Traveler SoulsTraveler Souls

Today we decided to take you with us to Transylvania. So, we set off for the northwest of the country and decide to make our first stop, near the city of Sebeș. I had left informed and I knew that Alba county "hosts" the only canyon-type reservation in Romania. Here we would discover for the first time the Red Ravine.

We leave the A1 and venture to our tourist destination. We say we venture because as soon as we passed under the highway, we entered a forest road, quite difficult especially when it rains, as was our case. Thus, a road of about 4 kilometers was covered in about 30 minutes.

We consider ourselves lucky because at the end of the road the rain stopped, and we were able to go for a walk to see more closely the spectacle of nature that would take our breath away.

The specific micro-relief, represented by towers, columns and earth pyramids was made due to the high slope, lack of vegetation and landslides. Here is one of the largest caves in the world developed in the earth, "Hole of Thieves", which has 25 meters of development and 4.5 meters of elevation gain, the hiding place of ancient thieves, according to legend.

The "Earth Organ" formation can be compared to the one found in the Grand Canyon of the Colorado River in the USA, which geographers call "bad land". On top of it is a beautiful meadow, full of trees, among which, when we arrived, the sun was stubborn to penetrate.

Red Ravine is an oasis of relaxation and a good place for a picnic, a walk, to take some photos, but also for a breath of fresh air.

Although it is a lesser known place, it is well worth a visit, especially for those who are passionate about geology. If you do not want to travel the rugged road, the reservation can be admired from a great distance, even from the A1.
