Hiking in the heart of Brașov: Gabony Steps-Belvedere Brașov-Tâmpei Saddle-Knights Road

Writer's picture: Traveler SoulsTraveler Souls

Being in the charming Brașov on a white and cold winter day, we decided to go hiking right in its heart. I slammed the baby of the Postavaru Massif that watches over the city, namely Mount Tâmpa.

There are several routes through which you can take a walk on Tâmpa, but we, lovers of adventure, muscle fever and weights, have chosen as a starting point the so-called Steps of Gabony, 167 in number, built between 1930-1931 by a Hungarian nobleman.

Technical information about the route:

  • Marking: "yellow triangle", "blue stripe";

  • Difficulty: medium;

  • Length: ~ 4 km;

  • Duration (it is relative - in our country, it includes “contemplation” of the landscape, stops for photos): ~ 3 hours;

  • Accessibility: all year round;

Map, below:

The first part of the route is marked with a “yellow triangle”, visibly exposed both on the walls along which the “edge” of Tâmpa is bypassed, through Brașov, and by signs placed especially for this purpose.

Arriving at the starting point of the route, we proceeded to walk on the steps on which lay the fresh snow that delighted our eyes.

After climbing a few steps, you reach a stone bench, near which is carved in the rock a plaque with the name of the person who supported the construction of the steps.

Of course, we did not refrain from shaking a few snow trees. That we're just kids, aren't we?

We continued our difficult ascent on the stone steps that alternated with pieces of the trail.

Here and there, Brașov shyly appears among the branches.

After a climb - we say, difficult - here we arrived at the first stop, where winter has already made its presence felt on the bench and the table intended for the rest of the hiker.

However, nothing stopped us from sitting for a few minutes to admire the dreamy landscape among the snowy branches.

After another 10 minutes of crossing the steps we reach the glade on Mount Tâmpa.

Here is a wonderful viewpoint over the Valea Cetății neighborhood, also known as Răcădău.

If you follow the same route during the summer, the landscape of this part of Brasov is more spectacular and full of life, here is a theme park with butterflies and flowers.

In winter, the advantage is that the route becomes exciting - you do not know where to step, how to slide, shake a tree, throw snowballs on other hikers, these aspects being enough to convince winter trail enthusiasts to embark on an adventure.

We continued the adventure through the "snow story", also on the yellow triangle marking, until we reached a telecommunications pole, a small "Eiffel Tower" in Brasov near the Panoramic Restaurant.

The Panoramic Restaurant, an attraction on this route, watches over the city.

From there, we proceed to Belvedere.

Choosing this destination, I had the opportunity to admire the part of Brasov that includes the old center. The panorama was visible next to the large, representative letters on the Tâmpa - "B R A Ș O V".

Also, going on this marking, I had the chance to find the Ruins of the Brassovia Fortress.

The Brassovia Fortress was an important historical monument for Brașov, being built in the Middle Ages on an area of over 20,000 square meters. It was first recorded in a document in the 15th century and was the main point of defense of the city.

The fortress was considered impossible to conquer. Unfortunately, at present only the fountain of the fortress is still visible.

Near the fortress, we were able to admire the beauty of winter again and we continued the hike to what the map looked like Tâmpei Saddle, located at an altitude of 848 meters, where we found the marking below.

Choosing the path marked with a blue stripe, the route takes place on a road known as the Knights' Road. It would take us to the promenade area under Tâmpa, close to the Weavers' Bastion, but not before walking along a wooded path, in front of which we fell silent.

The greatness of nature never ceases to amaze us!

Did I even find traces of ...? Fox? Or maybe traces of a dog walked by the owner? Only the master's traces were missing!

Towards the end of the route, the beautiful Brașov appeared again.

Reaching the heart of the city again, we gained a feeling of peace of mind, a feeling that only nature has the power to give us, the people.
